In what seemed like a moment, Julia was startled awake by a buzzing noise. She’d apparently been so content in Tristan’s arms that she’d drifted off to sleep.

“Sorry. I thought it was off.” Tristan leaned toward the table, moving Julia slightly forward with his body. As he paused the laptop, Julia noticed by the counter bar that the film was nearly over. She wondered if Tristan had fallen asleep, too.

He held his mobile in front of them both to view the screen, a text from an unknown source, with only the digits of the number to identify it. Julia assumed it was a wrong number or spam and that Tristan would ignore the message and resume the film.

But glancing at those first few words on the screen, she realized it wasn’t a stranger or telemarketer at all.

Pleeeease reconsider, the message said. This was someone Tristan knew.

He shifted to rise up into a sitting position. Julia moved with him then scooted apart a little to give him some space on the sofa. Maggie yawned audibly at her feet.

“Who’s it from?” Probably too nosey of her, but she didn’t care. Surely they were at the stage where they could ask a question like that without feeling squeamish.

Tristan didn’t answer. He kept one arm at Julia’s waist and used his other hand to tap the screen, revealing the full message. Then he grunted under his breath.

“It’s nothing. Well, it’s something, but it will be nothing.”

“How do you mean?”

He lowered his mobile and turned to face her. “This morning I got a text from Cynthia.”

“Your ex?”

“Yeah. I’m not sure how she found my number. We haven’t spoken in years. She likely pried it out of her brother.”

“Gavin.”

“Right. Anyway, she texts this morning, asks me to join the reunion.”

“Oh. I didn’t realize she would be there, too.”

“Neither did I.” Tristan made deeper eye contact, as though checking to see whether Julia believed him. “I only just found out today with her first text. Apparently, she’s returned from the States, moving back to Cornwall—that’s where the twins are from. I’m sure Gavin told her about the reunion and that I had turned him down.”

“Or maybe the reunion was her idea.”

Tristan shrugged. “Doesn’t matter. I’m not going anyway.”

As though to prove this point to her, he set his mobile down on its face.

Unconvinced, Julia felt the warm glow inside her turn a little cold. “Well, maybe you should go. To the reunion, I mean. If it’s what you want.”

Tristan gazed at her. “Cynthia doesn’t change anything. I still don’t want to go. In fact, seeing her text makes me want to go even less. I have no desire to see any of them, especially Cynthia.”

“I just…” Julia shifted on the sofa, faced him squarely. “I don’t want you to feel like you can’t go because of me. You can do whatever you want.” She only half-meant the words as they came out. The part of her falling deeply for Tristan felt oddly possessive, wanted him to break away entirely from his past and only focus on her, on them.
